| Note | SPECIAL SALE – MASTERPIECES OF THE JES COLLECTION: At 112.2 mm, this MAGNIFICENT specimen not only represents a substantial increase upon the current WRS of 106.1 mm, but unquestionably ranks amongst the FINEST KNOWN examples of this ultra-rare, endemic, deep-water Queensland species. A mythical shell amongst Australian Volutidae collectors, a live-collected specimen has never yet been found, but the current specimen approaches closest to the probable live-collected colour of the species of the few examples I have ever encountered. Extremely RARE QUALITY for the species, size, and collection method. Exquisite colour: luminous lemon-ivory ground, decorated with nebulous axial zigzags in vibrant yellow. Fully mature, greatly thickened, flaring apertural lip. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls – never collected since – and almost impossible to obtain now, especially at this level of size, quality, and beauty. An opportunity for a highly advanced Volutidae specialist to acquire a ‘museum piece’ example of this 'classic' rarity. Data: Swain Reefs, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 80-120 m; trawled; 1982. Size: 112.2 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
