Callistocypraea leucodon - SMALL SPOT WONDER , Broderip 1828
Size
86.1 mm
Locality
Bohol, Philippines
Note
Exquisite example of a rare highly sought after live-captured deep water Western Pacific collectors showpiece. Ultra thick and glossy nacre with an impressive array of large/long aperture teeth, a desirable collectors variation. Also evident is smaller, reduced/diffuse dorsal spotting with a classic wide dorsal line. The solid shell has a moderate weight/size ratio, thick calloused margins, moderate rostration and pronounced, flawless elongate aperture teeth. The specimen exhibits seamless extremities, lustrous base and notable tubercles on both margins favoring the labral side . The leucodon was trapped by tangle nets at 150-200 meters in the late 90s off Bohol, Philippines. The shell displays two inclusions between aperture teeth, soft negligible dorsal scratches/blemishes buried in thick nacre dorsally and is slightly “growthy” on the columellar wall. Taken all together; Grade: F+++.
