| Note | An EXCEPTIONAL ULTRA-LARGE specimen of this EXTREMELY RARE and much coveted deep-water, endemic Queensland subspecies – far rarer than the nominate subspecies. Typically dead-collected, with worm-hole predation and erosion, the current specimen is one of the FINEST LIVE-COLLECTED examples ever found during the long-gone days of availability. Markedly more slender than the nominate subspecies. Elegant proportions. Beautiful rich earth palette: deep ochre-orange, with characteristic dark chocolate spiral bands. Rare retention of pin-point protoconch – very important for the connoisseur. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls – never collected since – and now obtainable only from choice old collections. An exceedingly rare ‘top of the line’ specimen for the advanced Volutidae specialist, or admirer of exquisite seashells. Data: Off Townsville, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 80-120 m; trawled; 1983. Size: 93.6 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
