Heliacus areola areola (Linnaeus, 1758) Philippines | 15.5 mm EXCEPTIONAL SPECIMEN WITH A REMARKABLE HYPERSTROPHIC PSEUDOSINISTRAL ANOMALY A remarkable and highly unusual specimen of Heliacus areola areola from the Philippines, measuring 15.5 mm. The shell displays the rare hyperstrophic pseudosinistral (“ultradextral”) condition, producing the striking appearance of a sinistral shell. This is not a true reversal of chirality, but an unusual developmental anomaly resulting in a reversed-looking shell morphology. An important characteristic of this malformation is the loss or absence of the earliest whorls of the spire. This is a consequence of the abnormal mode of development and should not be considered damage. Consequently, finding a hyperstrophic pseudosinistral Heliacus retaining a completely intact early spire is virtually impossible, making specimens displaying this characteristic morphology particularly desirable to specialists and collectors. This unusual phenomenon has been documented and discussed in detail by Harry G. Lee, including specimens of Heliacus from the Philippines. A rare and fascinating collector's specimen, particularly interesting for specialised collections of Architectonicidae, shell anomalies and unusual gastropod morphology.
