Note

Favriella fusiformis Stahlschmidt, Chino, Tardy & Nappo, 2026 Philippines, Olango Island, Tingo Strait, 250 m | 5.7 mm VERY RECENTLY DESCRIBED SPECIES – FIRST RECENT FAVRIELLA A fine specimen of the recently described Favriella fusiformis Stahlschmidt, Chino, Tardy & Nappo, 2026, collected by trawling at 250 m depth off Olango Island, Tingo Strait, Philippines, on 6 March 2026. This species is of particular scientific and collecting interest as it represents the first living species ever recorded for the genus Favriella, a genus previously known principally from Pliocene fossil deposits of the European Mediterranean region. Its discovery in the Recent Philippine fauna therefore considerably extends both the known geographical and temporal range of the genus. Favriella fusiformis is readily recognised by its characteristic fusiform shell, strongly gradate spire and sharply shouldered whorls, combined with dense axial sculpture and comparatively weaker spiral sculpture. The shell is further characterised by its long, gradually narrowing last whorl and relatively long siphonal canal. The specimen offered here measures 5.7 mm and displays the distinctive morphology and attractive light-brown colour pattern of the species, with irregular darker brown spots. An exceptional opportunity to acquire a very recently described Philippine species representing the first Recent occurrence of an otherwise fossil genus, from the deep waters of the Cebu Strait.
