Zoila jeaniana jeaniana - Bernier Black Top !!! , (C. N. Cate, 1968)
Size
70.8 mm
Locality
Bernier Island, WA
Note
Jeaniana collected off the west side of Bernier Island are typically large with dark dorsums, high cream margins with intense black spots and ink black bases. They are highly prized and locally known as "Big Black Tops". This specimen was collected southwest of Bernier Island during June 2026 from a geodia sponge in 76 metres of water. The shell exhibits the dark dorsum with a wide chevron patterned mantle slot. It has a black base with ginger brown margins. There is a soft dorsal fold and the shell has been bitten by a fish resulting in small chips in the posterior siphon and a small dorsal tooth indentation. The animal has coated these issues with a thin veneer of additional nacre. Fine+/Fine++. It is graded Fine++ as there is a healed posterior siphon chip and some fine nacre scratches to the sides.
