| Name | Cypraea lynx - W. AUST. CARDABIAN GIANT , Linnaeus, 1758 |
| Size | 62.7 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | An OUTSTANDING specimen of the very seldom offered or encountered CARDABIAN GIANT form – the most beautiful incarnation of the species. This form is unknown to even many advanced Cypraeidae specialists, and is worthy of a form or varietal name – e.g. ‘cardabiensis’. The form is characterised by ultra-large size; atypical solidity, and consequent weight; a markedly high dorsum; a beautiful pale dorsal palette; and the most spectacular dentition of any form: vivid red-orange. Ventrum with extremely well-developed ridge. Collected during the 1980s, these magnificent specimens came from around 6 km North of the famous Coral Bay. The ONLY opportunity I can provide for an advanced Cypraeidae specialist to acquire this striking geographic variant, undoubtedly absent from the majority of cowrie collections. Data: Off Cardabia, Gascoyne Region, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 2-4 m; dived; 1987. Size: 62.7 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
