| Size | 72.8 mm |
| Locality | U.S.A. |
| Note | An EXCEPTIONAL large specimen of this RARE, endemic Californian species, from the very ‘old days’ of Californian availability. Deep brick-red, with spiral accents of creamy green to spectacular aesthetic effect. As reported a year and a half ago, due to commercial over-fishing, and a devastating marine heat wave during 2014-2016, the species is now virtually extinct, (see Rogers-Bennett, Groth, & Carlton; Integrative and Comparative Biology; Volume 64; Issue 6; December 2024), and examples are now obtainable only from choice old collections. Now exceedingly difficult to obtain, especially at this level of quality and beauty. Definitely for the Haliotidae specialist seeking a first-rate example of this rare and beautiful species. Data: Off Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, U.S.A.; upon reef substrate, under slab, amongst kelp forest; 2-4 m; dived; 1977. Size: 72.8 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
