| Item | # 0004190710 | | Family | Cypraeidae | | Name | Cypraea tigris - RARE TORRES STRAIT GIANT , Linnaeus, 1758 |
| Size | 113 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | This MAGNIFICENT GIANT, of a RARE FORM, from an extremely RARE LOCALITY, is every bit as BIG and as beautiful as a SCHILDERIANA. The specimen comes from a remote island in the TORRES STRAIT, off Cape York Peninsula, in the far North of Queensland, Australia, and was obtained by old-fashioned ‘hard-hat’ pearl divers in 1968. Virtually no dedicated shell collecting has ever been undertaken at this isolated locality, and will certainly never be undertaken in future. Ultra-rich colour, with a supremely well-formed dorsal pattern, incorporating a well-delineated mantle line. Hypermature, with depressions corresponding to selected marginal maculae – a sign of hypermaturity not seen in many examples. Well-curated across the decades, with a fresh appearance, and thick, resplendent gloss. Definitely for the advanced Cypraeidae specialist interested in rare locality variants, or the dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Off Possession Island, Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia; upon coral reef substrate, in crevice; 15-20 m; dived; 1968. Size: 113 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
