Mitra patriarchalis - RARE QLD FORM - THE BEST , Gmelin, 1791
Size
20.6 mm
Locality
Australia
Note
Rarely do we know the precise moment at which a shell was collected. We are usually given the year, or, at best, the month. But the fascinating original 1970s label which accompanies this EXCEPTIONAL specimen of the RARE and beautiful QUEENSLAND form, gives the PRECISE TIME at which the shell was collected – 4:17 p.m., 19 July 1978. RARE QUALITY – PERFECTION. Ultra-clean, with no encrustation. The apex of this coral reef-dwelling species is often lost to erosion, but is completely intact in this exquisite example. Broad central spiral band of ultra-rich ochre. RARE LOCALITY. The most beautiful and perfect specimen I have ever encountered. Definitely for the Mitridae specialist, or admirer of truly exquisite seashells. Data: Langford Reef, off Shute Harbour, Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate, at extreme seasonal low tide; 1978. Size: 20.6 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
