An EXCEPTIONAL large specimen of the RARE and supremely beautiful QUEENSLAND FORM of this endemic south-eastern Australian species. The species is rarer in Queensland than in more southerly localities. RARE LOCALITY, now protected, with no fresh specimens being available in future. Rich cream ground, decorated with large, free-form maculations of reddish burgundy, and with an exquisite yellow-orange accent at the umbilicus. Fully mature: solid for size, with greatly thickened, gracefully sculpted apertural lip. (NOTE: I also offer an outstanding specimen of Astele rubiginosa, with which this species is sometimes confused, in this sale for direct comparison.) One of the most exquisite of all Calliostoma when seen at this level of quality and beauty. Family: Calliostomatidae. Data: Off Amity Point, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia; upon reef substrate, in coral crevice; 2-3 m; dived; 1986. Size: 24.6 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
