| Item | # 0004158914 | | Family | Cypraeidae | | Name | Cypraea spadicea - RARE QUALITY - HISTORICA , Swainson, 1823 |
| Size | 50.2 mm |
| Locality | USA |
| Note | As the Cypraeidae specialist will know, although the species was readily available during the mid twentieth century, it is exceedingly difficult to obtain a high quality specimen, devoid of the natural marks and issues to which the dorsum of this rock-reef-dwelling species is prone. The current specimen, by contrast, is one of the FINEST I have ever encountered. The specimen had passed through three renowned collections in its over seventy year history: that of the renowned American dealer and collector John Quincy Burch (1894-1974); the famous Australian dealer Lance I. Moore; and the JES Collection, and original labels from all collections accompany the specimen. The specimen was self-collected by Burch in 1952, and represents the oldest specimen of the JES Collection, yet, standing as testament to sound curation, the specimen appears virtually as fresh as if collected this year, with resplendent thick gloss, and rich, vibrant colour. A spadicea for the connoisseur, with illustrious provenance. Data: Off Corona de Mar, Newport Beach, Orange County, California, USA; upon reef substrate, under slab, at extreme low tide; 1952. Size: 50.2 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: 1) John Quincy Burch; Seal Beach; 2) Lance I. Moore, Sydney; 3) JES Collection, London / Melbourne. |
