Note
Specimen of Spondylus senegalensis sensu regional Canary Islands usage; identification provisional. Specimen from Tenerife, Canary Islands, West Africa. Collected in January 2025 at 28 m depth in an industrial marine zone, buried approximately 45 cm deep within a loose boulder field of volcanic rocks, in very low to nearly absent light conditions according to the diver. Shell exhibiting a striking ontogenetic chromatic transition, from a dark red to reddish-purple juvenile stage to a uniformly unpigmented white adult shell. Dimensions: lid 78 mm; base 73 mm; entire specimen with attached rocks 108 mm. Hinge / closing mechanism intact; ligament not present; no boreholes observed; apertural lip in perfect condition. Spination not fully intact, but the specimen remains well preserved overall. A highly unusual and scientifically notable specimen.
