| Note | GEM specimen of Spondylus senegalensis sensu regional Canary Islands usage; identification provisional. Specimen from Tenerife, Canary Islands, West Africa. Some specialists have noted similarities to the Brazilian Spondylus tenuis Schreibers, 1793 concept; Spondylus ictericus Reeve, 1856 is currently regarded as an unaccepted junior subjective synonym of S. tenuis. Neither name, however, is reflected in the prevailing local Canary Islands authority checklists, which continue to treat this form under S. senegalensis. Collected in February 2025 at 16 m depth on volcanic cliff habitat, by local diver. Shell with warm orange-red coloration and strongly contrasting pale cream spines. Base 80 mm; overall specimen length 90 mm. Hinge, ligament, apertural lip, and spination all appearing excellently preserved overall. No boreholes observed and no evident damage. Particularly striking for the preservation of countless fine, hair-like peripheral spines. |
