| Note | One of the LARGEST and FINEST known examples of this LEGENDARY RARITY, and one of the world’s great ‘collector’s items’. Extremely rare in Nature, upon account of its limited geographical range, this rarity is enhanced by three factors: 1) depth of habitat; 2) very little collecting was ever undertaken at the locality; and 3) collection of the species ceased over half a century ago, with the known specimens now being obtainable only when very rarely deaccessioned from important old collections. The rarity outlined above is further increased when SIZE and QUALITY are considered. Virtually all the known examples, including the current specimen, were obtained from the deep-water dredgings undertaken in the 1960s and early 1970s by Riley & Black. Extremely large size. VERY RARE QUALITY, incorporating retention of the ultra-delicate apex, and with all blade-like varices being in an exceptional state of preservation. When viewed from the perspective of looking down upon the spire, the vision is one of the most exquisite ‘FLOWERS’ of conchology – a supreme incarnation of natural beauty – see above left image. One of the greatest treasures of the JES Collection, now to be passed to another connoisseur of the world’s RAREST and most EXQUISITE seashells.
