| Note | An OUTSTANDING large specimen, and one of my favourite amphora of the JES Collection, upon account of its magnificent form and pattern. Numerous substantial axial zigzags of ochre caramel, across a yellowish ivory ground, to spectacular aesthetic effect. Markedly broad ovate form, of supremely well-formed proportions. The specimen is of the very seldom encountered or offered TORRES STRAIT form – the northern-most form of this species within Australian waters. Such specimens were only collected during the 1970s, and have thus been obtainable only from choice old collections for almost half a century. Importantly, the specimen is in its completely NATURAL state, without the ubiquitous smoothing of the apertural lip, to which virtually all specimens are subjected. The apertural lip naturally exhibits raggedness, as the shell is constantly growing, yet this is almost always smoothed to ‘improve’ its appearance. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist who wishes to obtain an outstanding specimen in its natural state, or for the dedicated colletor of BIG shells. A magnificent display piece for the top of the cabinet, or for a shell musuem. NOTE: This large shell requires a very large parcel for adequate protection, but I will round down postage to anywhere in the world to 45 EUR. Please factor this cost when bidding.
