| Item | # 0004047275 | | Family | BIVALVIA | | Name | Stirpulina ramosa , (Dunker, 1882) |
| Size | 33 mm |
| Locality | China |
| Note | Extremely rare! To date, fewer than ten individuals have been discovered worldwide, and only one specimen has ever been found with soft parts intact. Stirpulina ramosa adopts an endobenthic lifestyle—a mode of life that evolved independently twice within the Clavagelloidea: once giving rise to the Penicillidae, and once in the lineage leading to Stirpulina ramosa. It is the only non-sessile species within the Clavagellidae and, together with the penicillid Humphreyia strangei, represents one of the most compelling examples of convergent evolution. The genus Stirpulina first appeared in the Late Cretaceous, yet only this single species has survived to the present day, earning it the status of a living fossil. This particular specimen is nearly complete and retains all diagnostic features of Stirpulina ramosa, including the left valve fully fused with the adventitious tube (with the right valve remaining free), and the distinctive perforated "watering-pot" structure. |
