| Family | BIVALVIA |
| Name | Entodesma cuneatum - Curiosity: In substratum , (R. P. Lesson, 1831) |
| Size | 25 and 20 mm |
| Locality | Santo Domingo, central Chile |
| Note | A curiosity: two specimens of Entodesma cuneatum, measuring 25 and 20 mm, still attached to their substratum: Part of a colony of Pyura chilensis (measuring 58 mm in maximum dimensions). Entodesma cuneatum is a rare Lyonsiidae bivalve with nacrous interior and with a stiff periostracum. It lives exclusively into colonies of the tunicate Pyura chilensis, which have "shells" of cellulose. When Pyura is collected (it is edible) one can find some of these rare bivalves. This particular specimen was collected by fishermen who discarded most of the Pyura shells. |
