| Note | An OUTSTANDING VERY LARGE specimen of the RARE, deep-water JAPANESE FORM of this much coveted species, collected over half a century ago, during the very early days of Japanese deep-water trawling. Specimens were collected during the 1960s-1970s, and high quality large examples have now become ‘collector’s items’, and one of the most difficult to obtain of all Latixis, especially when a high level of preservation of the ultra-delicate, blade-like peripheral spines is concerned. These spines, substantially damaged in the majority of examples, are extremely long and well-preserved in the current specimen. Very rare retention of original operculum. An exquisite seashell when seen like this. NOTE: The habitat of the Japanese form is one of very thick, muddy sand. Thus, one may attempt to further clean the specimen if desired, but I have refrained from so doing, erring upon the side of caution where the ultra-delicate spines are concerned. Data: Off Aichi-ken, Chubu-chiho, Honshu, Japan; upon sand/mud/rubble substrate, amongst stones/rocks; 100-200 m; trawled; 1968. Size: 41.7 mm (diameter). Grading: Fine++; w/o.
