| Note | A superb specimen of this RARE, singular, very seldom offered, extreme deep-water species, collected half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of extreme deep-water Californian trawling. Such specimens were only collected by deep-sea research vessels, and a few early commercial trawlers permitted to work deep Californian waters for a limited time. For many years a highly prized ‘collector’s item’, until several specimens were obtained in the 1970s. Decidedly prehistoric appearance. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Family: Pseudomelatomidae. Data: Off Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California, USA; upon sand/silt/mud substrate; 600-750 m; trawled; 1977. Size: 52.5 mm. Grading: Gem.
