| Item | # 0004031688 | | Family | Volutidae | | Name | Cymbiola rutila macgillivrayi - THE REAL THING RARE LOC. , Cox, 1873 |
| Size | 84.8 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | An OUTSTANDING large specimen of the REAL macgillivrayi, from a rare locality – remote Opal Reef, near the Australian continental shelf, off Queensland. Characteristic solidity, and markedly ovate form. Deep yellow-cream ground, decorated with maculations of rich reddish orange; dusky ochre apertural interior. Superb pattern, of the highest aesthetic merit. Hypermature: ultra-solid and heavy, with thickened and glossed apertural lip. The original 1982 collection label accompanies the specimen. NOTE: The name macgillivrayi is often misapplied across the internet literature. True macgillivrayi, as Cox’s original description makes clear, is a broad, solid, heavy shell, of distinctly ovate form. It is not diagnosed by colour or pattern alone. ‘Shell ovate, or oblong-ovate; thick; ponderous; spire short … This fine species is allied to innexa, Reeve, but it is a much more ponderous shell’. Data: Opal Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate; 4-6 m; dived; July 1982. Size: 84.8 mm. Grading: Fine+++ (extremely minor fraying to labral side of anterior canal). Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
