| Note | A superb ULTRA-GIANT of the famous MONTEBELLO ISLANDS form, from the very ‘old days’ of availability. The geographically restricted chiragra population of this isolated region is renowned for producing the LARGEST known examples of the species. The World Record Size specimen – a little larger than the current example – also comes from this population. (An Australian legend attributed the giganticism exhibited by this population to the nuclear tests carried out in this region in the 1950s as part of Operation Hurricane.) Such giants have not been freshly collected for many years, and have become sought after ‘collector’s items’. Beautiful delicate pink apertural interior. Retention of enormous original operculum. A rare opportunity for the Strombidae specialist, or dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. NOTE: This extremely large shell requires a very large parcel for adequate protection, but I will round down postage to anywhere in the world to 45 EUR. Please bear this in mind when bidding. Data: Off northern coast of North-West Island, Montebello Islands, Western Australia, Australia; upon coral sand/rubble substrate; 6-8 m; dived; 1977. Size: c.302 mm (longest dimension).
