| Item | # 0004004031 | | Family | ECHINOIDEA | | Name | Loxechinus albus - Giant! , (Molina, 1782) |
| Size | 129 x 71 mm |
| Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
| Note | One giant (W= 129 mm, H=~71 mm, with spines) and very nice live-taken specimen of Loxechinus albus, an edible sea urchin found in Chile. This specimen is amazing and it keeps most of its spines (they have lots of densely-packed spines). This one was collected by a fisherman in a remote location in northern Chile, and it is of the largest that I have obtained. Currently, it is very rare to get large specimens because this species is heavily exploited and also because the algae forests where they live are now threatened. So it is very difficult to obtain such large and very nice specimens like this one. The specimen was carefully cleaned with soft brushes and soap, but it still can be cleaned further to perfection, keeping their spines or not. This is a very rare giant specimen, perfect for a sea urchins collection, large size collection, or wunderkammer. A low initial price for such an amazing specimen. |
