| Item | # 0003994494 |
| Family | Pectinidae |
| Name | Argopecten purpuratus - Gargantuan! , (Lamarck, 1819) |
| Size | 142.5 x 123.5 mm |
| Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
| Note | One very nice gargantuan and giant 142.5 mm (W) x 123.5 mm (H) specimen of the only pectinid species found in northern Chile: Argopecten purpuratus. This is the largest Argopecten purpuratus specimen that I have seen so far. This specimen was recently collected alive by a diver at about 15 m depth in a very remote location. Argopecten purpuratus have purple, pink, brown, orange or white coloration, with mixed patterns too. This specimen is in very good condition for the species and for the huge size, having only some old scars and some remainings of cirripedian on one valve. The specimen was cleaned lightly with only soft brushes and water so it displays the very nice feathery sculpture of the ribs, but can be cleaned to perfection with some care. An interesting pectinid for the collector of giant shells or for your wunderkammer, impossible to get in this size. |
