| Note | In the area west of Cape Margaret River in depths of 120 to 130 metres of water we find huge variation in the friendii population with shells that vary from being very kostini like to those that are very similar to inshore friendii. They have huge diversity in both colour and shape. This appears to me to be a transitional zone where deeper water kostini has interbred with shallow water friendii.
This specimen was collected in April 2018 from a white funnel sponge in 128 metres of water west of Margaret River. Reluctantly extracted from our personal collection.
Virtually identical in shape to inshore friendii found in Geographe Bay. It exhibits sparse fine tan spots on a grey cream dorsum, has a cream base and margins with black lateral spots and gold siphon trim. It is a slender shell with prominent intact siphons.
Graded Fine+++/Gem- as it has minor growth irregularity on its labial side. It is a vary rare and exceptional friendii. |
