| Note | This INCREDIBLE GIANT – the LARGEST of the JES Collection, and one of the largest known specimens – was collected half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of New South Wales deep-water trawling. It illustrates the full expression of the species where size is concerned, although exceedingly few specimens of this size are known. Markedly inflated whorls, enhancing its monumental appearance. Dense and spectacular pattern of reddish ochre axial markings. A ‘museum piece’ of conchology for the most advanced Volutidae specialist, or collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Off Eden, South Coast Region, New South Wales, Australia; upon sand/silt substrate; 150-180 m; trawled; 1975. Size: c. 235 mm. Grading: Fine++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
