Fissurella maxima Very Large
119.4 mm     Caldera, northern Chile     2,00 €
Item# 0003945356
FamilyFissurellidae
NameFissurella maxima - Very Large , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834
Size119.4 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteOne very nice live-taken and very large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurellidae. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of giant Lessonia algae. Large Fissurella species in Chile are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and almost always damaged. The dorsum of the shell is always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain large specimens like this one. This one was collected recently by fishermen, and it is in good condition for the species and the size, with a very nice natural dorsum (lightly cleaned) with no Scurria scars or boreholes. There is some damage at is anterior part, probably due by the fishermen when they caught this specimen, hence the very low initial price.
