54.9 mm Kangaroo Island, South Australia 290,00 € |
|
| Item | # 0003928173 |
| Family | Cypraeidae |
| Name | Zoila orientalis f. raybaudii - REMARKABLE PATTERN , Lorenz 1992 |
| Size | 54.9 mm |
| Locality | Kangaroo Island, South Australia |
| Note | Impressively globular, superbly inflated specimen with spectacular anterior marginal tubercles and marginal flaring. Esthetic specimen displaying a remarkable dispersed collage of dorsal spots and elaborate interfused maculae patterning. The shell shows flawless margins, base and exemplary nacre gloss of the dorsum. The shell exhibits a relatively flat base with exceptional form and symmetry. The subspecies population was primarily located in a limited area of southern Australia and there are no recently captured specimens that have emerged from the area in over a decade. Contributing to the reduced or possibly eliminated population is a challenging and active toxic algae bloom plaguing the area for the last 8 months. Currently, specimens are only available from old collections. The orientalis was collected at 26 meters while nested in a sponge on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia circa 2005. The specimen demonstrates two self-glazed chips on each of the posterior extremity tips as viewed in the second image to the right side. Grade: F++. |
