-Collector: Licensed local diver
-Shell Length: 110.0 mm
-Condition: Research-grade; complete, minimal encrustation
-Remarks:
This specimen of Spondylus senegalensis (Schreibers, 1793) exemplifies the classical bright red morphotype typical of the Canary Islands, specifically from the eastern coastal cliffs of Fuerteventura. The vivid pigmentation and reduced spination correspond to the canonical phenotype of this species, distinguishing it from the less frequent hypopigmented or purple morphs occasionally recorded in the region.
The specimen is fully mature and morphologically representative, with a maximum shell length of 110.0 mm. While this places it in the upper adult size range, it remains below the exceptional maximums (>130 mm) reported from deeper West African localities. Shell condition is excellent and qualifies as research-grade, with complete hinge apparatus, intact commissural margins, and no evidence of bioerosion or mechanical damage.
Post-collection treatment included gentle surface rinsing and light manual removal of superficial carbonate encrustations. Minor residual carbonate accretions remain, primarily at the basal valve region, but these are superficial and removable without compromising the shell’s structural integrity.
The interior surfaces are clean, displaying well-defined cardinal teeth and adductor muscle scars. These attributes, combined with its overall completeness, chromatic fidelity, and verifiable provenance, render the specimen highly suitable for taxonomic verification, morphometric comparison, and documentation of regional phenotypic variation within curated institutional or museum collections.
-Status: (d/c)
-Condition: Research-grade; 110.0 mm
-Colouration: Saturated coral-red external pigmentation across both valves, with marginal orange undertones and faint radial zoning. Chromatically typical of S. senegalensis populations in the eastern Atlantic.
-Spination: Peripheral spine development reduced, as is characteristic of this species. Spines are short, robust, evenly distributed along the radial ribs; some exhibit natural apical truncation. Spine preservation excellent, with no post-mortem abrasion or detachment.
-Valve Morphology: Both valves convex, with prominent radial ribbing and dense, scale-like lamellae. Inner surfaces nacreous-white, glossy, and well-preserved. Valve margins (commissural edges, labial lobes, auricles) intact, showing full hinge articulation with no mechanical loss.
