This listing features a pale chromatic form of Spondylus senegalensis (Schreibers, 1793), (d/c) with decomposed soft tissue, collected at 26 meters depth during a certified marine infrastructure assessment conducted in the port area of Tenerife, Canary Islands.. The specimen exemplifies a markedly desaturated phenotype, characterized by its light beige to ivory shell coloration — a rare variation within this typically dark red to purple species.
Unlike the typically saturated dark red phenotypes observed in S. senegalensis, this individual exhibits a markedly desaturated, light beige chromatic profile. Such hypopigmented phenotypes are rarely encountered and may be attributable to site-specific factors including substrate reflectivity, turbidity levels, or reduced carotenoid assimilation. These traits make the specimen particularly relevant to investigations into pigment variability, phenotypic plasticity, and habitat-influenced morphogenesis within the Spondylidae.
The shell displays complete peripheral spine development, with all radial and lamellar elements intact. No mechanical wear, bioerosion, or post-mortem degradation is evident. The preservation state allows for high-resolution morphological and anatomical study, offering a stable reference point for comparative taxonomic and biometric analyses.
-Condition: Museum-grade; 90.0 mm
-Colouration: pale beige to ivory hue across the entire valve surface. Represents a hypopigmented phenotype—rare within the species and potentially indicative of environmental modulation or low carotenoid bioaccumulation.
-Spination: Peripheral spines fully developed and entirely intact; no signs of mechanical abrasion or post-mortem loss. Spine architecture sharply preserved, enabling high-fidelity morphometric analysis.
-Collection Depth: 22–28 m
-Collection Method: Recovered during certified marine infrastructure survey
-Substrate: Benthic artificial (harbor structures, container boat cleaning)
-Water Temperature: 20.4°C
-Salinity: ~36 ppt
-Visibility: ~4 metres
-Current: Strong
-Locality: industrial zone, Tenerife, Canary Islands
