| Note | F++/F+++. A COMPLICATE RANELLID. The Fusitriton magellanicus is a fascinating species of the southern half of the planet, with a taste for deep cold water.A short survey learns: F. magellanicus magellanicus lives in the southern part of South America, Chile, Argentina. F. magellanicus murrayi the subspecies form South Africa. F. magellanicus retiolus from southern Australia. F. magellanicus laudandus from New Zealand and the Chathams. The retiolus is undoubtedly the rarest of the subspecies, as it has never been properly figured in the literature. On the homepage of Jaxshells, we see under this name the laudandus, and the holotype of the retiolum is shown on the homepage of the Australian Museum. This is a dead collected poor quality piece. So, in fact we here deal with one of the first decent photographs of the retiolus. There is a nice drawing in the Henning & Hemmen book of 1993 (Ranellidae & Personidae). A superb rarity which has never been figured.
Australia. South Australia. Kangaroo Island. Trawled offshore. Circa 1980.
