Item | # 0003698305 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Pterynotus bednalli - DARWIN HARBOUR; EX P.C. , Brazier, 1878 |
Size | 63.1 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An outstanding specimen of the beautiful Darwin Harbour form. The specimen was collected by the late Peter Clarkson, (co-author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’). Although no original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen, Clarkson provenance is established as he was the only diver prepared to descend into the treacherous, crocodile-infested waters of Darwin Harbour in search of this miraculous ‘classic’ species. The Darwin Harbour form has a much finer shell than that of examples from Cape Leveque, and other localities. It also exhibits a range of beautiful earth colours – in this instance, deep pinkish orange and chocolate. Data: Darwin Harbour, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia; upon mud/silt substrate, partially buried in mud/silt; 18 m; dived; 1992. Size: 63.1 mm. Grading: Fine+++; w/o. Provenance: 1) Peter Clarkson collection, Port Lincoln; 2) JES Collection, London / Melbourne. |
