Muricanthus callidinus is a myctic species that is considered in some articles as a species and in others as a form or juvenile of the Muricanthus ambiguus or radix. Until a few years ago it was even confused with the pale-colored Hexaplex priceps. However, these are lighter in color with lighter spines and appear to be different in shape. For me after collecting all these species for years, from juveniles to adults it is clear to see that it is one form and most of the juveniles are whiter than adults. Here is a Muricanthus ambiguus with spines on the spire classic of the so-called Muricanthus calladinus. For experts and connoisseurs of this genus. Extremely rare cases with so sharp and intact perfect apex, very rare at this sizes and all spines intact. Magnificent perfect lines patttern all around with the best spiny spire. Museum piece beauty. Gem-F++++.
The Muricanthus population in Barra de Navidad, Jalisco is unique, as the specimens are inside a lagoon with mangroves nearby and protected from currents and waves, most of them covered with algae and mud keeping their apex, spines and body generally intact, something completely different from the populations in the open sea, with much damage to their shells.
