| Note | F++. AN INDIAN SPONDYLUS GRAVIS. This clam, which cannot be distinguished from the usually more western “Gravis” known from Somalia, was never easy to get. It became one of the most sought-after rarities after it was featured in T.C. Lan's renowned illustrated book in 1993. At that time, Somali fishermen often called at Italian ports. They brought Gravis in limited quantities of about a dozen pieces each. The species can be divided into two color forms: bright red and deep purple. It is likely that the Gravis lives in relatively deep water along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, as this shell comes from India and was collected not too long ago. Definitely collected alive and of excellent quality for the species, better than average.
