| Note | F+++. ONE OF THE RAREST SPONDYLUS. Shown in the literature with about a dozen figures, but the closest of all is the "Spondylus layardi form lemayi Jousseaume, 1927. You can seen the holotype of that one in WoRMS. The most likely type figure of layardi is to be seen in the Conchologia Iconica from Reeve, published in 1856: the volume 9. Reeve, Huber, Thach and Lamprell all go or layardi as a valid species, known from the Red Sea all the way to Vietnam and the Philippines. But visibly more common in the area of the Horn of Africa, where also this piece comes from. Rarissime in collection in general. Compared to what has been in the trade: lemayi forms are virtually non existent and this is a huge size for the species layardi.
