Note | F++/+++. AN UNCOMMON LARGE SPONDYLUS FROM THE CENTRAL INDO PACIFIC. Described by Reeve in 1856 based on a Philippine shell. The holotype figure leaves little doubt as on the identity: his shell has orange spines with a brown body, alternating rows with major spines with between in rows with tiny spines. Near the umbo a small zone of white with some dot pattern, and two "wings" - ears - with orange flattened spines. The shell here shown on the left could have been the real holotype, so resembling it is. However, the more classic color is a yellowish orange, the shell here shown on the top right. Usually, butleri have short spines on the left of the upper valve, when viewed from the front, umbo upwards, and longer spines on the right side. This is a splendid set, with the uncommon color, as seen in the type, and a similar shell, in the classic coloration.
Philippines. Bohol. 10-25 m. 2017.
