Item | # 0003353491 |
Family | Volutidae |
Name | Notovoluta pseudolirata - Displays Well !! , (Tate, 1888) |
Size | 45.4 mm |
Locality | Augusta, WA |
Note | Pseudolirata are reasonably common on the continental shoulder in depths between 160 and 230 metres of water off our South West Coast. The vast bulk of them are heavily damaged due to attempted predication by the champagne crab. This large very powerful crab is highly predictory on both the live volutes and the hermit crabs that use their shells after the animals demise. This regular mauling results in specimens having strong growth breaks and broken lips as displayed by this specimen.
Top quality specimens are extremely rare and hence command significantly higher prices. Even so this specimen is a representative of a rare deep water volute. Crabbed shell collected from 165 metres of water south of Augusta in January 2023. The shell has a broken lip.
