Item | # 0003333650 | Family | Trochidae | Name | Bathybembix humboldti - Very Rare, Selected , Rehder, 1971 |
Size | 58 mm |
Locality | Off Valparaiso, Central Chile |
Note | One large specimen of Bathybembix humboldti Rehder, 1971 (Height=58 mm, Width= 52 mm). This is a rare deep water species (200-1480 m depth) which is found from Ecuador to Chile. This species is only found as bycatch in shrimp and prawn trawls and it is very rare, as the fishermen here in Chile consume them and discard their shells, and they are often not landed at port. The shell of this species is found almost always decollated, without the protoconch and first whorls in adult specimens, while juvenile specimens retain sometimes the first whorls. This selected and large specimen was collected alive trawled in 320 m depth off Valparaiso, central Chile and it is in good condition for the species, having some minor defects (particularly in the earlier whorls),and some damage to the lip. This is your opportunity to obtain a very rare species for a rather low price (because of the lip damage). |
