Item | # 0003317474 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Macrocypraea cervus - DEEP WATER , (Linnaeus, 1771) |
Size | 100 mm |
Locality | Celestún, Yucatan, Mexico |
Note | This is a special shell. It’s a deep water form of this species we had never had before. You will notice a somewhat unusual color pattern in the aperture, around the lip, and it also has a thicker lip. The shell comes from an extremely remote deep water population. It was found while diving in open sea, 40 miles off the coast of Celestun, and at a staggering depth of 131 ft. This is the first time we get these open sea, deep water specimens, and it is not likely we will get them often, as collecting them can be quite dangerous, so the divers don’t get them frequently.
The specimen is in fairly good condition, with only the typical growth lines to point out. |
