Item | # 0003317459 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Macrocypraea cervus - DEEP WATER FORM , (Linnaeus, 1771) |
Size | 110 mm |
Locality | Celestún, Yucatan, Mexico |
Note | This is a very special shell. It’s a deep water form of this species we had never seen before. You will notice an unusual color pattern in the aperture, and it also has a thicker lip. The colors are honestly amazing, this is among the most uniquely-patterned cervus we’ve ever had.
The shell comes from an extremely remote deep water population. It was found while diving in open sea, 40 miles off the coast of Celestun, and at a staggering depth of 131 ft. This is the first time we get these open sea, deep water specimens, and it is not likely we will get them often, as collecting them can be quite dangerous, so the divers don’t get them frequently.
This specimen is in great condition, and truly one of the prettiest and most unique ones I’ve seen. |
