Item | # 0003314291 |
Family | Turbinidae |
Name | Turbo jourdani - Heavy Shell W/O !!! , Kiener, 1839 |
Size | 182 mm, w/o |
Locality | Augusta, WA |
Note | Big shell dive collected from a cave in 20 metres of water at Augusta, Western Australia in April 2023. The lips on jourdani are incredibly fragile due to the thick MOP layer which is prismatic aragonite at 90 degrees to the surface which acts like optic fiber hence the prismatic effect of MOP.
The shell has fine lip with very minor roughness. It is in very exceptional condition for the species. Conservatively graded Fine++ due to minor growth irregularity which is typical of virtually all specimens.
The spire is in excellent condition exhibiting the lovely pattern of the specimen when it was a juvenile , fading out to the very tip, almost like a spinning top!
The weight of the shell is 557 grams with the operculum. Fine++ |
