Zoila venusta - South Coast Deep Water ! , (G. B. Sowerby I, 1847)
Size
68.4 mm
Locality
South of Middle Is., Esperance
Note
In deep water off the south coast we find venusta that are very different from their shallow water counterparts. We refer to them as deep water south coast venusta given they do not have a form name.
This shell was found in July 2022 crawling on sand in 78 metres of water south east of Middle Island to the east of Esperance. It is heavy and has more pronounced siphons than specimens dive collected in shallow water around the Esperance Islands. Pretty shell goldish dorsum, a white base with beige trim, pinky gold sides and siphon trim. Graded Fine++ due to a growth fold on the shells columnar side and some small nacre inclusions. Venusta in this area are sand dwellers as there is no reef. The habitat is flat sand with very sparse sponges.
