Item# 0003311094
FamilyCypraeidae
NameZoila kostini - Leemanensis , Lorenz & Chiapponi 2007
Size71.1 mm
LocalityJurien Bay, Western Australia
NoteI have just relocated the vessel from Busselton to Geraldton. On our way north we had a good look at the edge of the continental shelf west of the Jurien Bay / Leeman area and there appears to be a fauna change between this area and the Rottnest / Lancelin area. We are seen different volutes including weaveri and gerondiosi and we have seen no evidence that andreyi extend this far north. In particular the kostini are consistently different to those found between Lancelin and Augusta. The southern population is smaller and quite diverse in colour with sparse fine spots or no dorsal spots at all. The shells found off Leeman are consistently larger and have coarse darker spotted dorsa, less rounded bases and more prominent siphons. As I can see an obvious difference between the populations I have decided to refer to the northern shells as "leemanensis". This name has no taxonomic standing. This very exceptional specimen was collected from 195 metres of water west of Jurien Bay during March 2024. It has coarse, dense dark brown dorsal spots, a semi-rounded china white base, white margins with black lateral spots and gold siphon trim. The shell offered is a particularly dark and attractive specimen. The shell is gem other than two nacre stress lines on it's base perpendicular to it's aperture. These cannot be photographed but can be seen under magnification in reflected light at the sites of the green arrows. GEM-
