Item | # 0003301268 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Natural dorsum , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 86 and 76 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | Two nice and selected specimens of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. This lot has two specimens in nice condition, with a very nice lip with tiny nicks in the smaller specimen and with no nicks in the larger specimen, and a nice natural uncleaned dorsum covered with brownish algae and white calcareous algae (in the smaller specimen), and some small barnacles that can be cleaned easily with some patience, but with no Scurria scars or other damage (as can be seen in the images). These are particularly nice specimens for the species at a good low price. Once cleaned, they will reveal the beautiful pattern of dark red-brownish rays over a cream-white background. |
