Item | # 0003298454 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Zoila kostini - Leemanensis , Lorenz & Chiapponi 2007 |
Size | 65.9 mm |
Locality | Dongara, WA |
Note | Over the past ten years I have had a desire to collect friendii on the continental shelf west of Geraldton to study the inter-grade between aurata and kostini.
Until recently we had only found one live specimen in 200 metres of water east of the Abrolhos Islands. The reason for the difficulty in doing this has been exceptionally strong currents in the area and our inability to find sponge beds. In February 2023 we had some success finding a number of specimens, west south west of Dongara and to the southwest of Geraldton.
The shells we found were different to both kostini and aurata. They were consistently larger than
southern kostini, more colorful with coarse
spotting not unlike aurata, and less rounded with mostly china white base. They can be quite
vercoi like in shape. Perhaps 70% kostini and 30% aurata is an apt description. I have decided to refer to them as "leemanensis". This is appropriate in my view as this form is found off Leeman and extends from Jurien Bay to the Abrolhos Islands.
This specimen is a crabbed shell we found in 205 metres of water west south west of Dongara in February 2023. The shell has a coarse gold spotted dorsum and prominent gold trimmed siphons. It has nacre loss due to abrasion. Lateral photos
available on request.
