Item | # 0003230528 |
Family | Ranellidae |
Name | Priene scabrum , (P. P. King, 1832) |
Size | 43 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | A very nice specimen of Priene scabrum. This is an exceptional specimen, with a perfect shell with no flaws and without periostracum.
Priene scabrum is the only representative of the genus Priene, a genus endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This is the only Ranellidae found in northern Chile. The shell of this species is usually in very bad condition, with broken protoconch and eroded first whorls. They also have a thick but dehiscent brown hairy periostracum, which hiddens the very nice spiral and axial sculpture in this species. |
