Fissurella crassa WRS Image Not Available97.7 mm Caldera, northern Chile 105,26 € |
|
Item | # 0003024007 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella crassa - WRS , Lamarck, 1822 |
Size | 97.7 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | A very nice (F+), thick, and extremelly large specimen of Fissurella crassa (WRS?). Large Fissurella species are actively collected by fishermen, so they often have nicks and damages on the border of the lip, and they are always found with scurria scars on the shells. This particular specimen is in excellent condition (with minor erosion and a few nicks to the lip), and it has no scars, chips or growth marks at all. Bretos (1980) cited specimens of this size at over 10 year of age, however this specimen is larger that the 685 specimens that she examined at the time. This is an important specimen, the largest obtained in the area in the last years.
Most recently, a smaller, 93.6 mm shell specimen (with chips and scars), of Fissurella crassa was auctioned at Conchology.be for 140 euro. The present specimen is larger and it is in better condition overall. |
