| Note | One of the rarest and most sought-after cowrie species in the world, and the greatest miniature treasure of the JES Collection, this is one of the very few known LIVE-COLLECTED specimens of this much discussed, much coveted, and extreme rarity. Present in only a handful of the world's cowrie collections upon account of the many factors limiting its availability: 1. geographical restriction, (to the tiny atolls of the Society Islands); 2. depth of habitat, (60-70 m); 3. nature of habitat, (camouflaged upon reef); 4. risk involved in collecting, (dangerous diving depth); 5. size of species, (making it extremely difficult to find). Back in the 'old days' I transacted much business with the late, great American collector / dealer Dan Spelling, of Calle Empinado, California, and I recall with fondness the many great rarities we bought from, sold to, or exchanged with one another, this ultra-rare shell being amongst them. The original Spelling label accompanies the specimen. No longer collected, and never likely to be available again. A unique opportunity for the most advanced Cypdaeidae collector to acquire a virtually impossible to obtain species, with illustrious provenance. Size: 9.8 mm (length). Grading: Gem.
