Item | # 0002871666 | Family | CRUSTACEA | Name | Grapsus grapsusg , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 195 (W), 58 (H) mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | A specimen of Grapsus grapsus, one of the largest and most common crabs found in the rocky intertidal of the southeastern Pacific. It is primarily noted as an inhabitant of the Galapagos Islands (as seen in various documentaries). This is a very, very fast crab, and lives mainly in the surf zone, often on vertical rock faces. The carapace of this specimen measures about 58 mm and 195 mm extended from leg to leg. This beautiful and colorful specimen was found fresh dead on a tide line, and is preserved dry, in almost perfect condition (see photos). This is a very nice natural history item, a fairly large crab that is somewhat common locally, but rare in collections. |
