Item | # 0002651087 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Charonia lampas rubicunda powelli - MAGNIFICENT S.AUST.GIANT , Cotton, 1957 |
Size | 190.2 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A magnificent GIANT specimen of the beautiful deep-water South Australian form, from a rare locality during the ‘old days’ of availability. Striking colours: ultra-dark chestnut and tan maculations, with pink-peach early whorls, and cinnamon accents to outer apertural lip. Exemplary quality for this rough habitat, deep-water form, with nothing but the most minimal typical fraying to columellar ‘shield’. Originally described as a full species by Cotton, (who rightly recognised its difference to New South Wales specimens, exhibiting finer, broader shells), all Australian lampas are now classified as rubicunda, although, given a decided morphological difference between intertidal NSW specimens and those occurring throughout the southern coast, I think it useful to retain the distinction of ‘powelli’ as a form or varietal name. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Size: 190.2 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Four Hummocks, between Perforated and Greenly Islands, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate, amongst sand rubble; 30-50 m; craypot; 2006. |
